Movie Thoughts: See How They Run

Not perfect, but it has heart and everyone tries. I don’t mean that condescendingly. This is a smart film. The end twist is appropriately twisty. I enjoyed myself, though I drank three rum and cokes so that may have tainted my opinion.

Occasionally gets bogged down in its own meta-ness. Like a lot of horror movies nowadays, it thinks a lot of self-awareness automatically equals depth.

Sam Rockwell is one of my favorite actors, and it’s weird hearing him with English accent. He kind of mutters his way through the movie. Saoirse Ronan is a consummate actress — I’ve said this before — and she enjoys her role here and its pollyanna-esque motivations, and she uses her natural, musical Irish accent. Adrien Brody plays great scoundrel here. David Oyelowo also enjoys playing a neurotic, effete, overly sensitive and overly-dramatic playwright. Shirley Henderson has a tiny, pivotal, satisfying role. No one looks like they’re unhappy to be here.

It looks like Who Dun It movies are back, with Rian Johnson’s Knives Out serving as the flagship series. This is no Knives Out, but I don’t regret paying to see it. Still, best caught on a streaming service on a night when you can’t think of anything else to watch.
